BULLARD — Officials are informing motorists of a traffic switch set for this week as part of the ongoing U.S. Highway 69 and FM 2493 improvement project.

The Texas Department of Transportation said traffic will shift to the newly constructed, realigned section of FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway at U.S. 69 in Bullard. Once the switch is in place, the existing portion of FM 2493 (S. Houston St), south of CR 3801, will be closed to thru traffic.

Motorists should use caution in the area and anticipate possible delays as crews continue work in the area.

Ongoing projects for FM 2493

TxDOT is developing plans for improvements to FM 2493 with several projects currently underway along the 14-mile corridor, which stretches from Loop 323 in Tyler to U.S. Highway 69 in Bullard.

TxDOT’s preliminary plans for FM 2493 from FM 346 in Flint to Highway 69 south of Bullard include:

  • Widening from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway with curb and gutter
  • Adding a continuous center left-turn lane to provide additional safety for drivers
  • Incorporating sidewalks and bicycle lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, where applicable
  • Realigning FM 2493 with FM 2493-E at US 69 and constructing a grade-separated interchange

The widening project has been delayed until at least 2030, officials announced in January. The reason for that delay is to accommodate the time needed to acquire a right-of-way along the corridors and to be able to move the utilities that are needed before the construction can begin, according to the Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.  The MPO handles only planning and scheduling while TxDOT facilitates the design, engineering, right-of-way acquisition, utilities and construction details.
