Tyler Legacy’s 2025 basketball season came to an end with a 56-34 loss to Cedar Hill in the area round of the Class 6A Division 1 playoffs at Fairfield High School.

Turn the calendar to 2026, and it’s the Lady Raiders against Lady Longhorns in the area round once again. This time, the game will be played at Wills Point High School with a tipoff time of 6:30 p.m. Friday.

“They want it really bad,” Tyler Legacy head girls basketball coach Ross Barber said. “We also have some new blood this year with Jamyson (High-Williams), Armani (Walker), AJ (Crawford), Avery (Coleman) and Kayla (Allen). I feel like Jamyson, Armani and AJ at the guard spot can help us neutralize what Cedar Hill brings to the table.

“But the returners on the team really want to get another chance at them. We didn’t play our best last year. We were rattled early on. But if you take out the first quarter, it was a single-digit game the rest of the way and we played with them. We have to be prepared and play composed like we did against Sachse. We have to control the ball, limit turnovers, give up no second chances, take good shots and execute.”

Barber said the Lady Raiders scrimmaged Cedar Hill before the season, and it was a one-point game.

Cedar Hill (26-10) lost its regular season finale to Duncanville, 34-27, but had won four straight before that game. The Lady Longhorns opened the playoffs with a 60-41 win over Waco Midway.

Dawn Jones scored 14 points for Cedar Hill in that win. Kaylen Jordan hit three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Lyntoria Daniel is another key player for the Lady Longhorns. She had 9 points and 12 rebounds in the 2025 meeting against Legacy.

“(Daniel) is a good player inside and a great rebounder,” Barber said. “No. 5 (Jones) is their main scorer and shooter. When she gets it, she’s not going to pass it often. She’s very good in transition, has a good mid-range and can get to the rim. Jordan is their best perimeter shooter.

“They have athletes all over the place. They’re going to pressure you. You have to stop them in transition and take care of the basketball.”

Legacy (26-6) is coming off of a 54-41 win over Garland Sachse.

“I thought defensively we were really good in the first half, especially in the first quarter,” Barber said. “We track kills, which is three true defensive stops in a row. Our goal is seven a game. We had six in the first quarter. I’ve been here 10 years, and I don’t think we have ever had that. So to do that in the first quarter of a playoff game, we started off on a good note. We also took care of the basketball, took good shots and hit free throws down the stretch. I was very proud of the kids for their effort, for sure.”

The winner of Friday’s game will advance to face either The Woodlands or Cypress Lakes.
