HALLSVILLE — Mineola bombarded Atlanta from 3-point range early and never looked back on the way to a 58-33 victory in the area round of the Class 3A Division 1 playoffs on Thursday night.
“We lit it up early,” Mineola head girls basketball coach Anthony McQuary said. “We don’t typically shoot that well.
“Coming in, we saw man and zone on film, so we weren’t sure, so we kind of prepared for both. I told them, if they’re coming out in zone, we’re going to have to shoot some outside shots, and we’re going to have to be able to hit some outside shots. Fortunately, we were able to knock some down early and get it going, and that kind of sparked us. And then defensively, we’ve been good defensively all year. We just are able to apply a lot of pressure and make it hard on teams to do things.”
Just 28 seconds into the contest, Mahayla McMahon found Kali Chrietzberg, who knocked down a 3-pointer. Then 25 seconds later, it was Chrietzberg who assisted a Mahayla McMahon triple. Following a bucket by Atlanta’s Jalyssa Beltran, Chrietzberg connected from downtown again. Then, Kaitlyn McMahon drilled a triple to push the score to 12-2 with 5:46 on the clock as the Lady Jackets started 4 of 5 from deep.
After a putback by Beltran, Chrietzberg hit her third 3-pointer to make the score 15-4 with 3:30 left on the clock. Mineola was 5 of 12 from 3-point range at that point. With 2:21 left in the first quarter, Mineola attempted its first 2-point field goal as Mahayla McMahon drove to the basket to make the score 17-4.
“We practiced a lot on shooting and getting repetition and then we put it together for great offense just to be able to execute that,” Mahayla McMahon said. “And then defensively, just working on our rotations and just shutting their girls down.”
A Beltran jumper in the final seconds cut the score to 21-6 after the first quarter. Beltran had all of Atlanta’s first-quarter points as the Lady Rabbits were 3 of 6 from the field with eight turnovers in the opening frame.
Mineola made just one three in the second quarter — a Sophia Hogue triple in the final minute — as the Lady Jackets took a 32-12 lead into halftime.
The Lady Jackets connected on three more triples in the third quarter, one apiece from Kaitlyn McMahon, Canyon Redding and Haylee Nicholson. Redding also scored inside at the buzzer to give Mineola a 48-23 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The scoring was even in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Jackets added made threes from Chrietzberg and Nicholson.
Mineola finished 11 of 32 from downtown with six different players making at least one 3-pointer.
“It’s a blessing,” McQuary said. “Whenever there are multiple people out there that are able to score double digits or hit shots, or fill in the scoring when somebody has a bad night or has a lapse or whatever, it’s always a positive having multiple people be able to score and contribute and put points on the board for us. It makes us a lot more versatile, and it makes us a lot harder to guard and just makes us really tough to beat.”
Chrietzberg led the way with 14 points. Kaitlyn McMahon and Hogue each had 9 points. Mahayla McMahon had 7 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Redding had 7 points and six rebounds. Nicholson scored 6 points. Adelyn Steward had 4 points and five rebounds. Marley Johnson scored 2 points. Caroline Castleberry added seven rebounds and five steals.
Beltran led Atlanta (10-15) with 16 points. Maggie Winters had 11 points. Kadence Brackman added 10 rebounds.
Mineola (31-7) will face Rains in the next round. That game is tentatively set for Monday at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.
