Tyler fire officials investigate rash of fires near ‘Tent City’

Tyler fire officials are investigating after three small fires broke out late Tuesday night near “Tent City” area, where people who are homeless often stayed.

Tyler Fire Marshal Joey Hooton said the fires were reported around 11:30 p.m. after a passerby called authorities. Fire crews responded quickly and extinguished the fires.

Hooton said the fires are believed to have been intentionally set. He said the incidents occurred near an area recently cleared by Union Pacific, where homeless individuals had been staying in what is commonly referred to as “Tent City.”
