Patrick "Pat" Mahomes Sr. was booked into the Smith County Jail on Feb. 3, 2026.

Patrick “Pat” Mahomes Sr. was arrested Tuesday in Tyler after allegedly violating his probation while serving a five-year sentence for a driving while intoxicated conviction.

Mahomes Sr., 55, was sentenced to five years of probation in September 2024 in connection with a Feb. 3, 2024 arrest that resulted in a driving while intoxicated (third or more) charge after being stopped by police on Gentry Parkway in Tyler.

Mahomes Sr., former MLB player and father of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, entered a guilty plea in September 2024 and began his probation. The first year of his probation was ordered with intense supervision. If Mahomes Sr. were to fail his probation, he could face 10 years in prison.

Mahomes Sr. was six months sober at the time of his September 2024 sentencing. He allegedly drank alcohol, violating his probation, according to CBS19.

A probation violation report order was issued on Jan. 13, according to the Smith County District Attorney’s Office. The report states Mahomes Sr.’s probation officer was notified on Jan. 5 that Mahomes Sr. had a high alcohol reading on his ankle monitor on Jan. 1. According to the report, Mahomes Sr. on Jan. 5 submitted a urine analysis, which came back negative for alcohol. Another urine test on Jan. 9 was also clear.

A motion was filed to revoke probation following the alleged violation and Mahomes Sr. was arrested Tuesday morning then booked into the Smith County Jail.

A hearing date hasn’t been scheduled yet. Mahomes Sr. can contest the allegations.

Smith County Criminal District Attorney Jacob Putman said in a previous interview those placed on probation or community supervision have to follow a set of rules.

“Any violation of those could cause someone to go to jail and be revoked and ultimately sent to prison,” Putman said.

This week’s arrest is exactly two years after the arrest that led to Mahomes Sr.’s latest conviction, which was the result of his sixth driving while intoxicated arrest in Smith County since 2012, according to online jail records. During the February 2024 stop, the officer saw an open 16-ounce beer can in the console of Mahomes Sr.’s car during the traffic stop, an arrest warrant affidavit states.

Before his son became a world-famous athlete, the elder Mahomes was a standout athlete himself that played professional sports for over a decade. Mahomes Sr. was an all-state quarterback in the late 1980s at Lindale as well as all-state in basketball and baseball. He turned down scholarship offers in basketball and football to several schools including Arkansas before going the Major League Baseball route. He was taken in the sixth round of the 1987 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He also played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was in the majors for 11 years.

In 2019, Mahomes Sr., was sentenced to 40 days in jail for DWI second or more. Judicial records state he served weekends to fulfill that sentence.
