Lily Jones, 17, of Bullard and valedictorian of King’s Academy Christian School, was recently accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the most prestigious and competitive universities in the world. MIT is known for its top programs in science, technology, engineering and math, and admits only the most exceptional students.
“All things considered, my chances of getting into the school of my dreams were extremely slim, and I remember preparing for disappointment, so I couldn’t believe I had been accepted,” Jones said.
Jones earned a perfect ACT score, winning a congressional commendation from U.S. Rep. Nathanial Moran and recognition as a National Merit Commended Scholar.
Jones has received several scholarships, including awards from the Texas Elks Lodge, East Texas Communities Foundation, Dr. Wayne McEntire Memorial, DCU for Kids, Dodgen Family, CCECA and Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success program.
“I feel so blessed to have received the awards and honors that I have, plus this acceptance,” Jones said. “I’m planning on studying mechanical engineering at MIT starting this fall.”
In addition to her academic achievements, Jones competed in varsity volleyball, track and cheerleading at King’s Academy.
Jones’ accomplishments highlight her dedication and hard work as she prepares for college.
“As a word of advice for those reading, don’t be afraid to take risks and put yourself out there,” Jones said, “because otherwise, you’ll never know what you’re really capable of.”
