WHITEHOUSE — Whitehouse extended its winning streak to 11 games and handed Lufkin just its second loss since March began — both to Whitehouse — with a 6-2 decision in District 10-5A play on Tuesday night.

“First and foremost, Lufkin has been on quite the roll lately,” Whitehouse head baseball coach Greg Branch said. “That is a very good team over there.

“Second of all, we just talked about controlling what we can control. I know there’s a lot going on with the district, other teams winning and losing, and we’re just trying to control what we can. And the biggest goal for us coming into district was to win the home games, no matter who we played. That’s what we did tonight, and the kids were fired up to play.”

Whitehouse (20-5, 11-0) hasn’t lost since a 7-6 non-district setback to Forney on March 7. Lufkin (16-7, 8-2) lost 8-4 to Prosper Rock Hill on Feb. 28 but has gone 14-2 since. The two losses were both to Whitehouse — 11-2 March 14 at Lufkin and then on Tuesday.

“Just being 10-0 starting off, we were just driving to keep going,” Tye Davis said. “This team, we have a good connection, so getting to celebrate 11-0 is what we needed this season.”

Lufkin jumped ahead 1-0 on Tuesday with an RBI single by Jaden Tamez in the top of the second inning. Whitehouse got the run back in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI sacrifice fly by Price Bryan.

The Wildcats gained the lead in the third inning. JJ Idrogo led off with a double and then scored when Jojo Adams reached on an error. With the bases loaded, Hunter Cook hit a shot to Jace Camp at third. The ball hit the glove of a jumping Camp, who caught the ball off the rebound and then tried to double play at first base. Adams sprinted home on the throw to make the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Craig Forke struck out the first two Wildcats. Idrogo walked, Adams singled and Reed walked to load the bases with two outs. Davis then delivered a three-run single to push the score to 6-1.

“This season started off slow for me hitting wise,” Davis said. “Being able to come out and kind of get some insurance on the runs, it felt amazing.”

That ended the night for Forke, who allowed six runs — five earned — on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 3.2 innings. Jaxton Cordova pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with two strikeouts and no walks after hitting the first batter he faced. He retired the final seven hitters.

Lufkin scored a run in the fifth with an RBI groundout by Jack Bowers.

Winn Harriss came in for the Wildcats and allowed no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks in three innings to close the game. Tyler Keen allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four innings, allowing hits to Tamez and Grant Stafford to start the fifth before exiting.

“You can’t count these guys out,” Branch said. “We’ve been behind multiple times this year, and you just can’t count them out. They’re going to keep coming after you. There is no panic in the dugout. They just regrouped, got the run back, and you saw what we did after that.

“Winn was injured a few weeks ago at Texas High, so we’ve been very gentle with him coming back. But our trainers, his family and himself really felt like he could help us tonight. So when we got that lead and took it after Tyler Keen had a great outing, we knew it was time to shut the door with Winn.”

Davis led Whitehouse with two hits and three RBIs. Idrogo, Adams, Reed and Caleb Russell all had a hit.

Tamez led Lufkin with two hits. Stafford, Mack Slaton and Sam Fitzgerald all had a hit for Lufkin.

Whitehouse will play Saturday at Nacogdoches. Lufkin will host Nacogdoches on Friday.
