Texas College President Dwight Fennell to retire in 2026

Texas College President Dwight Fennell will retire on June 30, 2026, a year earlier than his current contract, according to a press release from Texas College.

Fennell, who has led the historically Black college in Tyler since 2008, announced his decision during the Board of Trustees’ annual meeting.



During his tenure, Fennell oversaw significant institutional growth, including financial stability, academic expansion and campus improvements, according to the college. 

Under his leadership, the college said it has maintained a balanced budget for 17 consecutive years, increased its endowment from less than $1 million to more than $10 million and completed $19 million in campus renovations with no outstanding debt.

Texas College has also strengthened its academic programs, securing three cycles of institutional accreditation and working toward a fourth, according to the press release. The school achieved accreditation for its teacher preparation and social work programs and introduced the Alpha Chi National Honor Society chapter on campus. Other advancements include improved student support services, virtual learning programs and expanded educational partnerships.

Reflecting on his presidency, Fennell described his leadership experience as one of “pleasure, humility, joy and comfort,” while also acknowledging the challenges faced along the way. He credited faith and teamwork for the college’s progress.

Board Chair Bishop Lawrence Reddick praised Fennell’s dedication, stating that his “focus and persistence” have strengthened the institution. The Board of Trustees approved his request for early retirement, with members expressing appreciation for his years of service.
