Tatum captures state basketball title

SAN ANTONIO —  This time, there was never a doubt.

After making four previous trips to the University Interscholastic League State Basketball Tournament and coming up just short, the Tatum Eagles took control early here Friday and cruised to an 84-49 win over the Columbus Cardinals to capture the Class 3A Division I title at the Alamodome.



Tatum ends the year with a 32-2 record under head coach Brett Carr, who has announced this is his final season coaching the Eagles.

Tatum concluded an impressive postseason run that included a 29-point win over Mineola to open the playoffs, followed by a 16-point victory over Liberty-Eylau, a 20-point win over Ponder, a 28-point win over Jefferson and a 39-point state semifinal win over Iowa Park.

The Eagles took control early Friday with standout senior JaCorie Bradley scoring 16 points in the opening quarter as Tatum built a 28-8 lead.

The Eagles led 50-19 at the half and 61-36 heading into the final stanza.

Bradley and Luke Sigler both finished the day with 26 points. Jordan Chambers added 13, Cooper Whiteus 11, Nalayus Boyd six and Cayden Tatum two. Tatum added five rebounds, two assists and a steal, Sigler seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, Bradley seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, Chambers 13 rebounds, five assists and a block, Whiteus four rebounds, four assists and three steals and Boyd three assists and three steals.

Grayson Rigdon scored 31 points in the loss for Columbus.

Tatum outscored the Cardinals 54-22 in the paint and had a 20-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Eagles, who made trips to the state tournament in 2003, 2011, 2014 and 2021, lost 85-73 to Jefferson back on Dec. 10 and avenged that loss in the regional finals.

After a 69-68 loss to Kountze back on Dec. 28, the Eagles closed the regular season with 12 straight wins and then won six postseason games to end the year with an 18-game winning streak.
