SAN ANTONIO — Senior Caelyn Williams scored 19 points to lead Broaddus to its first state title, 56-39 over Clyde Eula in the Class 1A Division 1 girls basketball championship game Thursday afternoon at the Alamodome.



Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, blocked four shots and had three assists to earn championship game MVP honors.

Jalia Mitchell and Kaylynn Quinney each had 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs (35-4). Mitchell had eight rebounds and four assists, and Macie Cook finished with 5 points and 11 rebounds.

It was also the first state title for Broaddus head coach Nigel Boyles, who coached at Tyler Lee in the 2014-15 season.

“This is my first time at the state tournament as a coach,” Boyles said following Thursday’s game. “I’ve only dreamed of this moment for my entire career. It’s absolutely everything I thought it would be.”

Broaddus led 12-8 after the first quarter, 29-18 after the third quarter and 42-34 after three quarters.

Emma Damron and Hailie Cauthen led Eula (36-3) with 12 points each.

Eula was 6 of 30 from 3-point range, while Broaddus was 2 of 6 from downtown. The Lady Bulldogs owned the size advantage as Eula’s tallest player is 5-11, while Broaddus has five players 6-0 or taller, including the 6-2 Cook.
