Softball Notebook: Troup’s Taylor Gillispie, Bullard’s Brooklyn Brannen, Arp’s Maddie Birdsong take weekly honors

Troup’s Taylor Gillispie, Bullard’s Brooklyn Brannen and Arp’s Maddie Birdsong have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Softball Player of the Week honors for games played Feb. 17-22.
Gillispie, a senior, and Brannen, a junior, are the Pitchers of the Week.
Gillispie, a Trinity Valley Community College signee, picked up three wins, posting a 0.00 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Brannen went 2-0, striking out 24 batters and posting a 0.00 ERA with one hit allowed in 12 innings. She threw a no-hitter against Gilmer, striking out 10 with one walk in five innings.
Birdsong is the Hitter of the Week. She went 9-for-15 (.600) with three home runs, five doubles, 14 RBIs, eight runs and three stolen bases as Arp went 4-2.
In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):
PITCHING
Whitehouse’s Taylor Morris went 2-0, allowing one earned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts, seven walks and a 0.77 ERA in nine innings.
Grand Saline sophomore McKennah Davis, pitched three tournament games, allowing three hits and two walks. She had a three-inning perfect game against Slocum.
Fruitvale sophomore Kyla Bain had 27 strikeouts in 12 innings at the Spring Hill Tournament, collecting her 300th career strikeout.
HITTING
Tyler Legacy’s ReNaa Hicks was 5-for-11 (.455) with two triples, four RBIs, eight runs, two walks and five stolen bases.
Bullard junior Denim Boles hit went 4-for-8 (.500) with a double, an RBI and a hit by pitch.
Whitehouse’s Taylor Morris went 4-for-7 (.571) with a home run, a double, five RBIs and two runs.
Lindale’s Emma Watkins hit .667 with four hits, a double, a triple and three RBIs. She’s currently on a five-game hitting streak.
Arp’s Neci Potts went 11-for-16 (.688) with two home runs, a double, nine RBIs and 13 runs as the Lady Tigers went 4-2. Aubry Way went 10-for-15 (.667) with a home run, two doubles, 11 RBIs and two runs. Addison Carpenter went 9-for-14 (.643) a home run, five RBIs, nine runs, four walks and four stolen bases. Lacy Fletcher went 6-for-12 (.500) with two home runs, six RBIs, 11 runs and four walks.
Troup’s Heather Longino hit .700 with a home run, three doubles, two triples and seven RBIs.
Grand Saline junior Gracie Jo Currey hit .714 with five hits, a double, a triple four RBIs, five runs and a stolen base. Junior Lessa Autry hit .714 with five hits,a double, three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Freshman Madi Fugate hit .667 with six hits, five runs and two stolen bases. Junior Kolbi Philllips hit .571 with four hits, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
East Texas teams ranked in the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings are Longview No. 16 in Class 6A; Bullard No. 2 and Sulphur Springs No. 4 in 4A; DeKalb No. 6 and Arp No. 19 in 3A; and Cushing No. 16 and Beckville No. 19 2A/1A.
