Take a look at the state semifinal matchups for high school girls basketball, and you’re sure to notice a large East Texas representation.
There are seven East Texas girls teams competing in the UIL state semifinals — Martin’s Mill, Winnsboro, LaPoynor, Neches, Mabank, Broaddus and Zavalla — and one team headed to the TAPPS State Tournament — Brook Hill.
Unlike in years past where all semifinals and state finals for UIL were all played in one location, most recently in San Antonio, just the state finals will be played at the Alamodome in San Antonio this year with the semifinals spread out at neutral sites.
In Class 2A Division 2, Martin’s Mill is headed to the state semifinals for the fifth consecutive year and the 18th time in the last 20 years. Martin’s Mill is looking to win its second straight state title and eighth overall.
The Lady Mustangs (33-2), ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, will face No. 16 Goldthwaite in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lorena High School. The winner will advance to face either No 3 Farwell (34-3) or Lipan (24-11) at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome.
Winnsboro missed the state semifinals last year, but will be making its 16th appearance overall. The Lady Raiders went three straight years from 1991-93, four straight from 1998-2001 and then five more times from 2004-11. This is now the fourth trip in six years. Winnsboro’s three state titles came consecutively from 1999-2001.
Winnsboro (35-3), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, will take on No. 1 Tuscola Jim Ned (34-2) in the Class 3A Division 1 semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at China Spring High School. The winner will advance to face either No. 4 Fairfield (31-6) or No. 7 Corpus Christi West Oso (31-5) in the championship at 1 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome.
LaPoynor is in the state semifinals for the 12th time but first time since 2018.
The Flyers (26-11) will take on No. 14 San Saba (31-6) in the Class 2A Division 1 semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Waco Midway High School. The winner will advance to face either No. 2 Panhandle (32-3) or No. 8 Nocona (30-6) in the championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome.
Neches is in the state semifinals for the fifth straight year and 13th time overall.
The Lady Tigers (22-7) will take on No. 2 Broaddus (33-4) in the Class 1A Division 1 semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tatum High School. The winner will advance to face either No. 14 Borden County (28-8) or No. 3 Eula (35-2) at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome.
Broaddus is making its first state semifinal appearance in program history.
Zavalla is in the state semifinals for the third time and the first time since 1991 when Broaddus head coach Nigel Boyles played for Zavalla and scored 19 points in the semifinal loss to state champion Nazareth.
Zavalla (23-13) will face No. 11 Saltillo (33-6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Athens High School. The winner will face either No. 5 Nazareth (27-9) or Jayton (25-12) in the Class 1A Division 2 championship at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Alamodome.
Mabank is in the state semifinals for the first time since 1987.
Mabank (31-6), ranked No. 17 in Class 4A, will take on No.4 Decatur (33-2) in the Class 4A Division 1 semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mansfield Timberview High School. The winner will advance to face either No. 2 Waco La Vega (31-6) or No. 6 Fredericksburg (31-6) in the championship at 7 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome.
The Brook Hill girls are going to the TAPPS State Tournament for the first time. The No. 4 Guard (35-6) will face No. 1 Midland Christian (28-7) at 4 p.m. Thursday at Waco University High School.
