East Texas Showdown: Legacy tops Whitehouse in semis, falls to Pleasant Grove in championship

Tyler Legacy took second place in the East Texas Showdown, falling to Pleasant Grove in the championship game Saturday night at Mike Carter Field.

In the first game of the day — a Smith County showdown — Legacy rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to grab a 6-4 victory over Whitehouse in the semifinals.



Whitehouse’s Josh Cowart scored on a wild pitch. The Wildcats then got an RBI fielder’s choice from Josh Henry and an RBI sacrifice fly by Jonathan Orr to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Legacy got a run back with a two-out RBI single by Cale Zips in the bottom of the first inning.

Whitehouse scored again in the top of the second inning with an RBI single by Ben Reed to push the score to 4-1.

That was the final batter faced by Dallas Walker. Sophomore Jaden Davis came in and immediately got Winn Harriss to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

In the third inning, Legacy sent nine batters to the plate. Simeon Garner, Noah Felton and Brady Pollard hit consecutive RBI singles to tie the game, and then Davis had a sacrifice fly to score Garner for the go-ahead run.

Whitehouse loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. Davis then got Orr and Tyler Keen to fly out to Payne Hotman in center to end the inning. The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Brady Pollard.

Brady Symes came in to pitch the sixth inning. Alex Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and ended up advancing to third on a Tye Davis bunt before Symes got Jojo Adams and Reed to fly out to end the game.

Davis got the win, allowing no runs on three hits in 3.2 innings. Walker struck out the only batter of the game for either team.

Saylor Wilcox, Jared Beaumont and Brandon Wilson all pitched for Whitehouse.

Reed led the Wildcats with three hits.

Hotman, Pollard and Hable all had two hits.

Against Pleasant Grove, each team scored in the first inning. The Hawks scored one run each in the top of the third and top of the fifth to go up 3-1.

A three-run triple by Garner, followed by Felton driving him in, gave the Red Raiders a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Hawks responded with three runs in the top of the sixth on the way to a 6-5 victory.

Hotman, McKinney and Felton all had two hits for Legacy. Garner drove in three runs, and Felton had two RBIs.

Symes, Cole Kimmel, Walker and Knocx Scudder all pitched for Legacy. Kimmel struck out four batters.

Jace Elrod had a triple and two RBIs for Pleasant Grove. Louisiana-Monroe commit Jarrett Halter had a hit and struck out three in a perfect seventh inning to close the door on the victory for the Hawks. Spencer Browning struck out eight in six innings and also added a hit at the plate.

On Friday, in a 14-3 win over Kilgore, Whitehouse head baseball coach Greg Branch collected his 300th career win. Reed led the Wildcats with a triple, a double and three RBIs. Orr and Henry each had two hits. Davis had a triple, and Adams had a double. Mason Johnson earned the win, striking out five in 3.1 innings.

Whitehouse (3-2) will face Athens and Bullard on Thursday. Legacy (4-2) will play in the Clear Creek ISD Varsity Baseball Tournament beginning Thursday with games against Bellaire and Clear Springs.
