According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Feb. 13 to the UT Health Emergency Room regarding a possible sexual assault. The child’s mother told authorities her daughter had made an outcry about the assault.
Investigators identified Couey as the suspect. He is the husband of the child’s babysitter, officials said.
On Feb. 18, the child was interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Tyler. During the forensic interview, she described the assault in detail, using both verbal statements and anatomical drawings, authorities said.
The following day, investigators presented an arrest affidavit to 114th State District Judge Reeve Jackson, who signed the warrant. That afternoon, deputies located Couey at his home in Winona. He was seen leaving his driveway, and deputies initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of Winona School, where he was arrested without incident.
Couey was booked into the Smith County Jail.
