The City of Tyler is warning residents about a scam circulating on Facebook, falsely claiming dangerous criminals are in the area.

The fraudulent post, shared by multiple likely fake profiles, has appeared in local buy, sell and trade groups, as well as in groups in Illinois and Georgia. It includes mugshots of a Hispanic man and woman, labeling them as dangerous serial killers and falsely claiming they killed three Tyler police officers.

The post is fake, and there is no threat to residents, officials confirmed.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Tyler Police Department said, “We would never disseminate important information or warn the public like this.”
