ATHENS — Tyler Legacy’s basketball season came to an end on Friday night with a 47-42 loss to No. 21 Mesquite Horn in the area round of the Class 6A Division II playoffs.

“They’re good defensively,” Tyler Legacy head boys basketball coach Kyle Smith said. “They’re really good. It’s a tough matchup for us because they can take away what we do best. I still didn’t think we did a good enough job of getting (Ja’Corian) Oes the ball. You’ve got to get your best player the ball in big games, and that’s on me. I thought we fought and thought we played hard.

“I’m proud of these guys and all they’ve overcome. The seniors are great. I wish we could’ve kept playing, but I still think when they look back on it after it all settles in, it’s going to be a special memory for them.”

Legacy finished the season with a 23-13 record as Friday’s setback ended its 10-game winning streak. The Red Raiders won their first district title since 2021, reached the playoffs for the second straight season and won their first playoff game since 2007. On Friday, they were aiming to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 1977.

Legacy sprinted out to a 7-1 lead and with a 10-6 advantage in the final minute of the first quarter, KJ Cyres and Josh Hall connected from downtown to give the Red Raiders a 16-6 lead after one. Legacy was 4 of 7 from 3-point range in the opening quarter.
