WHITEHOUSE — Whitehouse senior Gabe Rogers will conclude his high school swimming career this weekend.
For the fourth consecutive year, Rogers has qualified for the UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet Friday and Saturday at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at The University of Texas at Austin.
Rogers is going in both the 100 free and 100 breaststroke in Class 5A.
“Gabe joins a very small group of four-timers,” Whitehouse head swim coach Scott Eeds said. “My last one was about 18 years ago. He really dug in this year and last year and made two events last year, and he’s repeating in those same events this year, so that is six total events over the four years. He’s started lifting weights, working out and doing those little things outside of school and swim to make him faster.
“I would love to see him get in the top three. He has a chance of being a medalist.”
Rogers is seeded sixth in the 100 free with a regional winning time of 46.53. He’s seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.55.
“I’ve never medaled, so that’s the goal,” Rogers said. “I didn’t think I would ever do it all four years, and I feel like it’s an honor to be able to do that. I’m proud of myself, and I’m happy to be here and keep swimming. I want to rank in the top eight and get to the finals, and if I can get medals, that would be awesome.
“It’s definitely said because I won’t be a Whitehouse Wildcat anymore. But it’s kind of cool at the same time to be like hey, it’s my last meet and it’s at state. It’s awesome to be able to do that.”
The Class 5A prelims begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, and the 5A finals are at 4 p.m. Saturday.
