Seven men from Chile have been charged in connection to the October burglaries at the homes of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a Whitehouse native, and teammate Travis Kelce.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida on Tuesday announced a criminal complaint against the seven for conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property.
According to the complaint, the men were “members of a South American Theft Group that burglarized the homes of professional athletes around the country.”
A burglary at Mahomes’ Loch Lloyd home was reported shortly after midnight on Oct. 6, according to a Cass County Sheriff’s report. Kelce’s house in Leawood was burglarized the following night while the Chiefs were playing the Saints on “Monday Night Football” at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Thieves took $20,000 in cash from Kelce’s home, Leawood police said. A watch allegedly belonging to Kelce was later recovered in Providence, Rhode Island.
“I can’t get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing, but it’s obviously something you don’t want to happen — to really anybody, but obviously yourself,” Mahomes said in November when asked about the burglary at his home.
Professional players from the Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals also had their homes burglarized, the federal complaint says.
The seven men charged in the complaint are 24-year-old Pablo Zuniga Cartes, 20-year-old Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, 27-year-old Bastian Jimenez Freraut, 22-year-old Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, 23-year-old Bastian Orellano Morales, 24-year-old Alexander Huiaguil Chavez and 38-year-old Sergio Ortega Cabello.
All seven are from Chile, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said, and each has been charged with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property. Each man faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the FBI and the Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office investigated the case with the help of the Leawood Police Department.
Also aiding in the investigation: Homeland Security Investigations, United States Customs and Border Patrol, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Hamilton County (Tennessee) Sheriff’s Office, the Shelby County (Tennessee) Sheriff’s Office, the Dallas (Texas) Police Department, the Indian Hill (Ohio) Police Department and the River Hills (Wisconsin) Police Department.
