The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office on Tuesday said it has identified Archie T. Brown, 87, as the victim of a house fire that occurred Jan. 23.
Fire crews were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. that night to a home in the 4100 block of Farm-to-Market Road 2908, east of Tyler near Old Kilgore Highway, after neighbors reported seeing flames coming through the roof.

Before firefighters arrived, a bystander pulled Brown from the burning home, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by Smith County Justice of the Peace Curtis Wulf, who ordered an autopsy.
The Fire Marshal’s Office delayed releasing Brown’s identity until the autopsy was completed.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the home was a total loss.
An investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office determined the cause of the fire to be undetermined but not suspicious. No charges are pending, according to Fire Marshal Chad Hogue.
