Lions open baseball season with win

Felipe Velazquez and Adrian Alvarado combined on a one-hitter as the Tyler Lions defeated Cumberland Academy, 7-1, on Monday in a baseball opener at the Knights’ diamond.
The Knights scored in the first, but the Lions followed with runs in the third (1), fourth (4) and seventh (2).
Alvarado, Adrian Perez and Velazquez each had two hits for the Lions.
Alvarado had two RBIs, scored three runs and had a stolen base.
Perez drove in two runs and scored a run, while Valazquez had three RBIs.
Tyler will now take part in the Howard Estes Tournament that is hosted by both Palestine and Jacksonville.
On Thursday, the Lions play in Palestine against Pittsburg (1 p.m.) and Palestine (4 p.m.).
On Friday, Tyler plays in Jacksonville against Mexia (4 p.m.).
The Lions will meet Iola at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jacksonville.
After visiting Alto on Feb. 25 (7 p.m.), the Lions host the Tyler High Classic Feb. 27-28 and March 1 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Mike Carter Field. The Lions are scheduled to play Nevada Community (7 p.m. Feb. 27), Palestine Westwood (7 p.m. Feb. 28), West Rusk (3 p.m., March 1) and Brownsboro (5 p.m., March 1).
