State Wrestling: Whitehouse’s McLaughlin, Winnsboro’s Fulmer earn runner-up finishes

Whitehouse’s Carter McLaughlin recorded the second runner-up finish of his career at the UIL Wrestling State Tournament Friday and Saturday in Cypress.

McLaughlin finished second in the 150-pound weight class in Class 5A, falling to Smithson Valley’s Bryce Palmer in the championship with a 6-4 decision. McLaughlin finished the season with a 24-1 record.



As a sophomore, McLaughlin advanced to the UIL Wrestling State Tournament in the 138-pound class and placed second in Class 5A.

As a junior, McLaughlin bumped up to the 144-pound class and placed fourth in the state in Class 5A.

McLaughlin started his senior state tournament by defeating Grapevine’s Ryan Pauken by technical fall (15-0). He then took a major decision win (10-0) over Mission Sharyland Pioneer’s Marcus Perales. In the semifinals, McLaughlin defeated Dallas Samuell’s Johnny White by decision (3-0).

Winnsboro’s Anthony Fulmer was also a state runner-up in the 215-pound weight class in Class 5A. Fulmer won two of his first three matches by fall and the other by technical fall (15-2) before falling to Highland Park’s Amin Elahmadi in the championship match by decision (6-5). Fulmer finished the season with a 27-2 record.

Winnsboro’s Keegan McNeil won his first two matches in the 285-pound class in Class 5A by fall before falling in the semifinals and then falling in the third-place match to finish in fourth. Fulmer finished with a 17-9 record.

Winnsboro sophomore Tatum Watkins dropped her first two matches in the 165-pound class in Class 5A. She finished the season with a 12-8 record.

Winnsboro sophomore Gracien Fulmer dropped her first two matches in the 185-pound class in Class 5A. She finished the season with a 17-4 record.
