Randy Martin, East Texas educator and grandfather of Patrick Mahomes, dies at 78

TROUP — Larry “Randy” Martin, a longtime educator in East Texas and grandfather of Patrick Mahomes, has died at the age of 78.

Martin died on Feb. 12 after he entered into hospice care in January, according to CBS19.



Martin, of Troup, had a passion for education and service, according to his obituary published by Rader Funeral Home. Throughout his career, Martin was a teacher, counselor and administrator at schools in Troup, Whitehouse, Palestine, LaPoyner, and Maydelle. He also worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Gatesville Boys School, where he spent 10 years as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor.

He had 13 grandchildren, including Patrick Mahomes Jr., Jackson Mahomes, Hannah Evans, Taylor Danley, Bradyn Reeves, Grant Herrington, Sam Martin, Savannah Martin, Emma Herrington, Houston Martin, Demi Fults, Jagger Fults, and Mia Randall. Martin’s obituary states he adored his great-grandchildren, Vivian, Evolet, Sterling, Colton, Briggs, Bronze, Natalie, Christian, Gabriel, Brooklynn, Whitt, Tripp, and Golden.

“He touched the lives of everyone around him with inquisitive spirit, wisdom, and love of music,” his obituary states. “His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.”
