Tyler Legacy is heading to the girls basketball playoffs for the first time since 2022 after winning its third district title in six seasons.

A year after going 18-13 overall and finishing last place in district with a 3-9 mark, the Lady Raiders flipped the script, entering the postseason at 29-4 overall after going 11-1 in District 10-6A.

“It’s fun to watch the growth,” Tyler Legacy head girls basketball coach Ross Barber said. “We knew going into last year that we didn’t have much experience at all. It was going to be tough. We were going to take some lumps, but they never quit. They never got down on themselves. They were still able to win some district ball games last year and all of them were close.

“And then all of them really worked hard in the offseason and continued to play and they just got better. Coming into the fall, we were able to throw more stuff at them. They were mentally locked in. We’ve been able to do some things this year we didn’t do last year because of experience. I’m really proud of this group.”

The Lady Raiders will take on Wylie (19-13) at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Corsicana in the opening round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

It will be the first playoff game for this year’s entire Legacy roster.

“We put in a lot of work, especially during the summer,” senior New Mexico State signee Senoj Jones said. “From going to last place to first place is really a surreal feeling. I’m just glad that everybody came locked in this year and was ready to play.”

A big key for the Lady Raiders, who average 53.2 points per game and hold opponents to 36.0 points per contest, is their versatility.

“I think with our height, it helps a lot,” sophomore Zareya Ceasar said. “Also, we can all play basketball. We can all bring something to the table. And we all just play hard.”

Wylie enters on a six-game winning streak, holding opponents to 28.5 points per game in that span.

“Wylie is solid,” Barber said. “They are very long just like us. They have guards that are 5-9 to 5-11, and then their posts are about 5-6 and 5-7. They have multiple people that average about 9 points a game. They’re athletic. Their first five or six are really solid, and they can come off the bench we some good players that can rotate in and give them some minutes.

“We’re going to have to be at our best. They’re a solid basketball team. They have playoff experience. That’s what we’ve got to overcome. They’re going to be ready to play, so we’ve got to be ready to go.”

The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to face either No. 10 Cedar Hill or Waco Midway.
