Lady Raiders celebrate seniors, district championship

It was a festive night at the Tyler Legacy High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Raiders fêted not only the seniors but celebrated their third district championship in six years.
Tyler Legacy, led by a double double from senior standout Senoj Jones, scored a 48-39 victory over Forney, clinching the outright District 10-6A girls basketball title.
The Lady Raiders moved to 29-4 overall and finished district at 11-1. Forney fell to 12-16 and 1-10.
“This team has put in the hard work plus the dedication to each other and the family atmosphere we’ve had and that they committed to all season,” Tyler Legacy Coach Ross Barber said of how his team earned the league crown. “The unselfishness.
“When you go from last to first it says a lot about their work ethic and them coming together as a group. I am so proud of them.”
After the game, Jones and three other senior players — Zion Smith, Shanaya Shaw and Cinahya Ekwuruke — were honored. They were given framed jerseys and a gift basket.
Jones, who has signed with New Mexico State, hit for 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also had four steals and two blocks.
Others scoring for the Lady Raiders were Holland Pine (10), Zareya Ceasar (6), Ekwuruke (5), Shaw (4), Nichole Baldwin (3), Smith (2) and DeCalia Bailey (2).
Pine had three 3-pointers with one each from Ceasar and Ekwuruke.
Shaw added five rebounds and two blocks with Ekwuruke drawing a charge.
Julia Knight led the Lady Jackrabbits with 12 points (4 3-pointers).
The Lady Raiders have a bye on Tuesday before the playoffs begin. Tyler Legacy will be in the Class 6A Division I playoffs with bi-district slated for either Feb. 10 or 11.
RED RAIDER RAMBLINGS: The Tyler Legacy JV squad also won the district championship, going unbeaten in league play for a 12-0 record. They were 27-3 overall with their only three losses against varsity teams in the Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro. They were unbeaten against all JV opponents. … The TL freshman team finished second in district.
