A Rusk County man is in critical condition in a Tyler hospital following a late night shooting.

Rusk County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to a call for service Tuesday on County Road 411D in reference to a reported gunshot victim. When deputies got there, they discovered the male victim and rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived. 

The victim was transported to UT Health in Henderson and later care-flighted to UT Health in Tyler. He is currently listed in critical, but stable condition with a gunshot wound to the head. 

The Rusk County Sheriff Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene and is currently conducting an investigation.

Witnesses as well as a person of interest have been identified in the investigation and investigators are currently following up on information and leads at this time.

“This is an active investigation and based on the initial findings there is no threat to the community,” said Rusk County Sheriff John Wayne Valdez, in a statement shared on the agency’s social media.
