Elite Eight: Tyler honors seniors as Lions top Dragons

On Senior Night, three seniors led the way with double figure scoring for the Tyler Lions.

Jaishua Brown and Geordon Mitchell paced Tyler with 20 points apiece, while Keiland Garvey added 14 points in the Lions’ 68-43 win over Nacogdoches in a District 15-5A basketball game at the Lions Den.



Before the game eight Lions were honored — Jaishua Brown, Alec Dewberry, La’Tavion Golden, Keiland Garvey, Tayvean McMiller, Geordon Mitchell, Cameron Singleton and Damien Yarbrough.

Brown, who is averaging 17.2 points per game, did not play in the fourth quarter as the Lions led 59-30 heading into the final period. He added eight rebounds, seven steals and two blocks. Brown hit a 3-pointer and was 7 of 7 at the free throw line.

Mitchell connected on four 3-pointers with four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Garvey grabbed seven rebounds, along with four steals and a block. He also had a 3-pointer.

Others scoring for Tyler were Golden (6), Yarbrough (6) and the lone junior on the team, Jasyn Grayson added two points.

Cameron Singleton and Grayson each had six boards with two apiece from Dewberry and Golden.

Dewberry and Grayson drew charges.

Micah Lockett led the Dragons with 15 points and six rebounds.

Also scoring for Nacogdoches were Jonas Hollins III (10), Ben Cox (7), Josh Morones (5, 1 3-pointer), Cameron Brady (3), Tyren Mathews (2) and Dernell Pleasant Jr. (1).

Hollins was 4 of 4 at the free throw line.

Adding rebounds were Cox (5), Hollins (3), Morones (3), Brady (2), Pleasant (2) and one each from Mathews, Chris Gardner and Evan Mosley.

For the game, Tyler was 7 of 15 from 3-point and 14 of 20 at the free throw line.

The Dragons were 1 of 16 from long distance and 8 of 11 at the charity stripe.

The Lions improve to 17-11 overall and 7-6 in district, while the Dragons drop to 9-16 and 3-9.

The Lions have a bye on Friday before two straight road games — Feb. 4 at Hallsville and Feb. 7 at Texas High. Tyler’s final regular season home game is scheduled for Feb. 11 against Mount Pleasant.

Nacogdoches returns to play on Friday, hosting Hallsville in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
