Tyler honoring Lions, Lady Lions on Senior Night

The Lady Lions and Lions will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday at Tyler High School’s Lions Den.
The District 10-5A basketball doubleheader matches Tyler and Nacogdoches. The girls game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m., while the Lions and Dragons are set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
Coach Bobby Reynolds will honor the Lady Lions before their tipoff, while Coach Justin Johnson will honor the Lions before their tipoff.
Lady Lion seniors include: guard Kalyse Buffin, guard Amori Gee, guard LaTajia Hambrick, center Bra’Shia Miller, post Mairany Olivarez and center Ma’Kayla Taylor.
Lion seniors include: guard/forward Jaishua Brown, guard Alec Dewberry, guard Keiland Garvey, center LaTavion Golden, guard/forward Tayvean McMiller, guard Geordon Mitchell, forward Cameron Singleton and forward Damien Yarbrough.
LADY LIONS 74, WHITEHOUSE 38
The Lady Lions continued on their path toward their goal of an unbeaten district championship by scoring a 74-38 win over the Whitehouse LadyCats on Friday at C.L. Nix Wildcat Arena.
Tyler, ranked No. 15 in the state, won its 32nd consecutive league game to improve to 28-5 overall and 14-0 in District 10-5A girls basketball. Whitehouse fell to 13-13 and 5-8.
Four Lady Lions scored in double figures, led by Kalyse Buffin’s 22 points. The senior standout also hit three 3-pointers.
Also in double digits were Bralyah Miller (18 points, 1 3-pointer), Jer’Miya Rice (12 points, 2 3-pointers) and Ariel Johnson (10 points, 2 3-pointers).
Others scoring for Tyler were Ameri Goss (6 points), LaTajia Hambrick (3 points, 1 3-pointer), Makayla Taylor (2 points) and Jaz Moore (1 point).
Top rebounders were Taylor (8), Miller (7), Rice (6), Hambrick (5), Johnson (4), Buffin (3), Goss (3) and Moore (3).
Tayla Morris led Whitehouse with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Before the end of the first quarter, Morris hit a 3-pointer from beyond midcourt.
Also scoring for the LadyCats were KT Thornton (9 points, 2 3-pointers), Hailey Morrison (7 points, 1 3-pointer) and Emma Cheatham (6 points, 2 3-pointers).
Morris had 10 rebounds and drew a charge with Thornton grabbing eight boards.
LIONS 52, WILDCATS 24
Jaishua Brown hit four straight 3-pointers and Jasyn Grayson grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tyler Lions to a 52-24 victory over Whitehouse on Friday in a District 10-5A basketball game at C.L. Nix Wildcat Arena in Whitehouse
The win moved the Lions to 16-11 overall and 6-6 in district. The Wildcats fell to 7-17 and 1-10.
Brown led Tyler with 23 points. He connected on those four 3-pointers and was 7 for 7 at the free throw line. The senior standout added eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Others scoring for the Lions were Grayson (6), Keiland Garvey (5), Tayvean McMiller (5, 1 3-pointer), Damien Yarbrough (5), Cameron Singleton (4) and Geordon Mitchell (4).
Adding rebounds were Mitchell (6), Garvey (5) and LaTavion Golden (4).
Along with his 10 boards, Grayson had four blocks. Mitchell and Golden added blocks.
Jordan Davis led Whitehouse with seven points. Other Wildcat scorers were Muhammad Diarra (5), Kade Richardson (4), Layne Hooker (3), Kadavion Pickens (3) and Preston Blakely (2).
Hitting 3-pointers were Hooker, Pickens and Davis.
Rebounds for the ‘Cats were Davis (7), Hooker (4), Ace Olivares (3) and Blakely (3). Diarra had two blocks with Olivares drawing two charges.
Other district results were: Lufkin 43, Hallsville 30; Texas High 60, Hallsville 52; Mount Pleasant 66, Marshall 44; and Nacogdoches had a bye.
