KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a nearly flawless game Sunday as the Chiefs defeated the Bills 32-29 and advanced to Super Bowl LIX.
Mahomes threw for 245 yards with a touchdown and a 111.9 quarterback rating. He also rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns.
But after scoring on that second rushing touchdown, Mahomes had probably his worst moment. It came when he tried to spike the ball.
“His worst pass of the night is on the spike attempt,” quipped CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz.
Mahomes offered a funny mea culpa on X following the game.
“I also apologize. That is why I dont try to spike the ball,” Mahomes wrote.
Mahomes could laugh, not only because the Chiefs punched their ticket to Super Bowl LIX, but because he had been heavily criticized by fans and some media members in the days leading up to Sunday’s game.
There were loud complaints that the Chiefs and Mahomes are receiving special treatment from the NFL referees and officials.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned Mahomes on X when talking about a potential shift in how games are officiated next season.
Mahomes had a perfect response to all of that.
“I’ll see yall in New Orleans! #ChiefsKingdom,” Mahomes wrote on X. He then reposted it with the famous meme of Kermit the Frog sipping tea. For someone whose voice has been compared to the Muppet, this was hilarious.
