Lions shut down Mavs

The win moves the Lions to 15-9 overall and 5-4 in District 10-5A. The Mavericks fall to 5-14 and 1-8.
Tyler led 22-17 at halftime, eventually taking a 34-28 advantage heading into the final period. The Lions then applied pressure, gradually moving ahead by double digits.
“After halftime, we came out a little more aggressive,” Tyler Coach Justin Johnson said. “I told them they didn’t have any shot blockers so I said we had to be at the rim. They did a good job of getting to the rack and playing with each other. We passed the ball better and played better defense and came away with the win.”
Johnson also praised the play of LaTavion Golden, who came up big in the second and fourth quarters, scoring three buckets in each period. For the game, Golden had 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Jaishua Brown led the Lions with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. The senior had six rebounds, two steals and four blocks.
Others scoring for Tyler were Geordon Mitchell (6), Keiland Garvey (5), Jasyn Grayson (4), Damien Yarbrough (3) and Cameron Singleton (2).
Also hitting 3-pointers were Mitchell and Garvey.

Ryan Knox and Ernest Crookshank led the Mavs with 14 points each. Also scoring were Jayden Cooks (6) and Jaiden Turner (1).
Rebounding for Marshall were Raijon Sims (6), Cooks (4), Crookshank (4), Caleb Paul (2), Turner (2) and Zytravius Willie (2). Crookshank had four blocks.
The Lions were 3 of 8 at the free throw line. The Mavericks were 6 of 13.
In other district games: Lufkin 56, Whitehouse 21; Jacksonville 58, Nacogdoches 57; and Mount Pleasant 41, Hallsville 38, OT. Texas High had a bye. On Monday, Hallsville beat Texas High, 61-53.
Tyler returns to play on Friday, facing Jacksonville (12-15, 4-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at John Alexander Gymnasium in Jacksonville.
Marshall is scheduled to host Hallsville (19-8, 5-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
