Tyler High splits pair with Texas High

It was a battle of THS vs. THS on Tuesday night in a District 10-5A basketball doubleheader at the Lions Den.

In first game, the Tyler High School Lady Lions defeated the Texas High School Lady Tigers, 70-40, while in Game 2, Texas High held off the Lions 64-55.



The pride of Lions are scheduled to hit the road on Friday, traveling to Mount Pleasant to take on another ambush of Tigers, pending weather. The Lady Lions and Lady Tigers are scheduled to play at 6:15 p.m., followed by the Lions and Tigers at 7:30 p.m.

The next scheduled home outing for the Tyler teams is set for Tuesday, Jan. 14 vs. Marshall.

The Texarkana schools are slated to host Hallsville on Friday.

LADY LIONS 70, LADY TIGERS 40

It was the fifth straight win for Tyler as the Lady Lions improved 23-5 on the season and 9-0 in district. The Lady Tigers fall to 2-7 in league.

After leading 10-3 after the first quarter, the Lady Lions exploded for 27 points in the second period for a halftime lead of 37-12.

Kalyse Buffin led Tyler with 26 points, including 8 for 8 at the free throw line. She had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Three Lady Lions scored nine points each — Bralyah Miller (9), Jer’Miya Rice (9) and Ma’Kayla Taylor (9). Also scoring were Bra’Shia Miller (5), Ariel Johnson (4), Ameri Goss (4), LaTaija Hambrick (3) and Amori Gee (3).

Hitting 3-pointers for Tyler were: Buffin (2), Hambrick (1), Johnson (1), Bralyah Miller (1), Rice (1) and Bra’Shia Miller (1).

Taylor paced the Lady lions with a monster game on the glass, grabbing 15 rebounds. Other top rebounders were Rice (7), Bralyah Miller (6) and Goss (3).

Rice added seven steals and three blocks.

The Lady Lions were 10-of-12 at the free throw line, while the Lady Tigers were 9-of-13.

Taryne Stiger led Texas High with 14 points, followed by Sereniti Collins (9), Ke’Aria Antwine (8), Zanasia Nelson (6) and Alyssa Porter (3).

Porter hit the Lady Tigers’ only trey.

Nelson led Texas High with eight rebounds with Collins (8) and Stiger (5) next in line.

TIGERS 64, LIONS 55

After a slow start and foul trouble, the Lions eventually took the lead in the fourth quarter but could not sustain the momentum.

Tayvean McMiller’s 3-point at the top of the circle put Tyler ahead 48-47 with 5:58 showing in the final period, but an inside bucket from Texas High’s Trevon Ellis put the Tigers up for good, 49-48 with 5:35 showing.

Jaishua Brown, who picked up two early charging fouls, led Tyler with 18 points while adding nine rebounds and two blocks.

Others scoring for the Lions were Geordon Mitchell (14), Keiland Garvey (10), Jasyn Grayson (8) and McMiller (5).

Brown, Mitchell and Garvey each hit two 3-pointers with McMiller adding one.

Garvey added seven rebounds with three blocks. Other top rebounders were McMiller (6), Grayson (5), Cameron Singleton (3) and Mitchell (3).

The Tiger guards were hard to stop with Jimon Haynes (17 points), Zadreon Clark (17) and Ellis (15) leading the way. Adding points were Adam Orr (6), Alex Orr (4), Braylon Pearson (3) and Justin Brown (2).

Haynes, Clark and Adam Orr each hit two 3-pointers with one each from Ellis and Alex Orr.

Brown drew three charges as the Tigers drew five overall.

Haynes and Adam Orr each had five rebounds with four from Ellis.

Alex Orr started the game but was fouled on his first 3-point attempt, making the free throw for the four-point play. He then left the game limping and did not return.

The Lions were 2 of 5 at charity stripe with the Tigers hitting 14 of 21.

The Lions saw their three-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 14-8 overall and 4-3 in district. The Tigers improved to 11-8 and 5-2.
