Tyler Legacy had its highest offensive output since the season opener with an 84-49 victory over Forney in District 10-6A action Tuesday night at Tyler Legacy Varsity Gymnasium.

It was the first time the Red Raiders scored at least 80 points in a game this season since a 90-54 win at Crandall on Nov. 8.

And this came on a night when the Red Raiders’ leading scorer, Ja’Corian Oes, who entered the game averaging 17.1 points per game, was limited to just 2 points.

Legacy had three double-digit scorers — Jayden Jones (23), Zyere Ceasar (22) and JP Rainer (11).

The Red Raiders hit 10 3-pointers in the game.

“Coach told me to score through the offense, find a rhythm through the offense, so that’s what I was focused on,” Jones said. “(Hitting shots) opened up the lane up for me a lot.”

“The past couple of games, for like a four-game stretch, I haven’t had that stroke of shooting,” Ceasar said. “To be able to get that confidence back, that helped.”

Ceasar was 4 of 6 from long range. Jones and KJ Cyres each made two triples, and Rainer and Henry both connected from downtown once.

It was just the fifth home game this season for the Red Raiders, the first since Dec. 20 and only the second since Nov. 26.

“We’ve only had five home games this year, so it’s nice to be back,” Legacy head boys basketball coach Kyle Smith said. “Half of our games left will be at home, so that will be a good thing.”

Legacy jumped out to an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter as Cyres nailed a transition triple in the corner in the final seconds. The Red Raiders scored 24 points in the second quarter, including a 17-4 run, to go into halftime with a 42-19 lead.

“We started off hot,” Smith said. “That’s something we didn’t do Friday at Rockwall. That’s so important to get off to a good start, so we were pleased with our effort right from the get go. I’m pleased that we had multiple contributors, not so reliant on one individual, which that’s going to be really important for us down the stretch.”

“That felt good,” Ceasar said. “We started a little bit slow versus Rockwall, but I was glad we were able to overcome that and start fast and be able to do it in front of the home crowd.”

“It was really big, coming off of a loss to Rockwall at their place,” Jones said. “And it was really big to come to our house and defend our home.”

Legacy led 61-37 after three quarters and outscored Forney 23-12 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

It was Legacy’s second win over Forney this season, defeating the Jackrabbits 54-46 on Dec. 27. That’s two of six times this season the Red Raiders have held an opponent to fewer than 50 points.

Outside of River Foster coming off the bench in the second half and going 3-for-3 from 3-point range, the rest of Forney’s roster was 0 of 12 from 3-point range. The Red Raiders also blocked eight shots inside. Foster scored a team-high 9 points for the Jackrabbits (11-9, 1-2) despite not playing in the first half.

“We wanted to come in, they have some real athletic drivers, guys that can get in the paint and finish, and we just wanted to try to clog things up and give a lot of help,” Smith said. “And I was pleased with us executing that and just kind of getting out and communicating and find a way to get it done.”

“I think we just communicated on defense a lot, talking to each other and making sure we rotate and everything,” Ceasar said.

“It was really good,” Jones said. “We were frustrating them at the rim.”

Jones had four rebounds to go with his 23 points. Ceasar had nine rebounds and three blocks to go with his 22 points. Rainer added five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Other scorers were Henry 7; Josh Hall 6; Cyres 6; Gage Nuckolls 5; Oes 2; and Brady Noyes 2.

Oes had 10 rebounds and six assists. Bryson Perkins added three steals.

Legacy (14-12, 2-2) is off Friday before hosting Rockwall-Heath on Jan. 14.
