Wagstaff Holiday Classic: Whitehouse, All Saints win early games

All Saints and Whitehouse picked up wins to open the 70th Annual Wagstaff Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon at Wagstaff Gymnasium on the campus of Tyler Junior College.

All Saints took down Henderson 50-37, and Whitehouse followed with a 55-48 victory over Cumberland Academy.

With the scored tied at 9 early between All Saints and Henderson, the Lions ended the first quarter with a 9-1 stretch, capped by a 3-pointer from Ayden Perry, to take a 19-10 lead.

All Saints opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run and outscored Henderson 19-2 in the quarter to lead 29-21 at halftime. A 13-6 third quarter pushed the Trojans’ lead to 42-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Caz Franks led All Saints with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Trey Newsome had 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.



Sam Walters had 6 points and six rebounds for the Trojans. Tate Cully scored 5 points. Manny Mizer, Sachit Basoor, Emerson Hadnot, Connor Kirkpatrick and Mason Patrick all had 2 points.

Perry led Henderson with 10 points. Other scorers were Brailon Walker 7; Vince Howard 6; Trevor Kind 4; Cardell Tatum 3; Jaxson Bradford 2; Justin Howard 2; Caiden Johnson 2; and A’mere Davis 1.

Trestan Ebner, a former running back for the Chicago Bears, is on Henderson’s coaching staff.

In the second game of the day, Whitehouse got 15 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks from Layne Hooker in a win over Cumberland Academy.

It was back-and-forth early. A 3-pointer by Cumberland’s Byron Gipson tied the score at 16 before Preston Blakeley scored to give Whitehouse an 18-16 lead after the first quarter.

The Wildcats ended the half on an 8-0 run with a Jordan Davis layup at the buzzer on a long lob from Ace Olivares to give Whitehouse a 34-24 halftime advantage.

Whitehouse extended its lead to 50-34 after three quarters as Hooker scored at the buzzer.

Kadavion Pickens had 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Wildcats. Davis had 10 points and eight rebounds. Other scorers were Olivares 5; Muhammad Diarra 4; Chris Sturns 3; Blakeley 2; Kade Richardson 2; and Justin Abello 2. Olivares added four assists.

Timo Simmons led Cumberland with 15 points and four steals. Gibson had 14 points, three assists and three steals. Ahmad Farrah had 8 points and six rebounds. Alex Mayo had 3 points and four steals, and Wesley Ramos added 2 points.
