TCU quarterback signee and Columbus High School standout Adam Schobel was announced as the winner of the Mr. Texas Football award on Friday afternoon by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, honoring the best high school football player in the Lone Star State.

Finishing his senior season as a state champion with a 48-14 win over Malakoff in the 3A Division I title game, Schobel led the Cardinals to a 15-1 record behind throwing for 3,734 yards and 55 touchdowns while rushing for 575 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He led Columbus to its first state championship in the program’s 98-year history.

Joining former winners such as Johnny Manziel, Kyler Murray and Marvin Mims, Schobel is the first player to win the award before going off to play at TCU. He is the third player to win the award from the 3A classification, joining Jonathon Brooks (2020) and Darian Godfrey (2009).

Schobel, who committed to TCU in July and officially signed with the program earlier this month, played at Columbus for his head coach and father, Matt, who also played at TCU as a tight end from 1998-2001 before playing seven seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s been an all-around family affair for Schobel, as his first cousin, John, is also signed to TCU as a three-star linebacker recruit. Adam’s uncle, Aaron, also played for TCU from 1997-2000 before playing nine seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

Schobel is the fourth-highest ranked quarterback to sign with TCU in the modern recruiting era, according to 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 16 quarterback in the country and the No. 32 recruit from the state of Texas. He is the No. 200 overall recruit in the country. He is part of a 2025 recruiting class for Sonny Dykes and TCU that finished first in the Big 12.

Schobel will be honored with the Mr. Texas Football trophy on the field during the Kinder’s Texas Bowl on Dec. 31 between Baylor and LSU.
