Girls Basketball Notebook: Martin’s Mill’s Kara Nixon takes weekly honor

Martin’s Mill’s Kara Nixon has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Girls Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played Nov. 18-23.
Nixon, a sophomore, averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game as the Class 2A No. 1 Lady Mustangs went undefeated and won the Jerry Daniel Invitational.

Nixon had 26 points in the championship game of the tournament in a 64-39 win over Class 6A previously undefeated Longview.
In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):
Tyler Legacy senior Senoj Jones averaged 23.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in two wins for the Lady Raiders. Sophomore Zareya Ceasar averaged 17.0 points and shot 75 percent from 3-point range.
Brownsboro’s Chyann Stidham averaged 11.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists as the Bearettes went 3-2.
Palestine sophomore Sydney Hughes averaged 14.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.5 steals per game in six games to earn Mabank All-Tournament honors. She had a game with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, seven steals and six blocks against Maypearl, 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, 14 steals and five blocks against Ferris and a career-high 27 points with 11 rebounds and four steals against Elkhart.
Hawkins 5-2 senior guard Taetum Smith averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 steals, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds, and she recorded her first career triple-double.
