Winnsboro rolls past Palmer, 48-7, in area

ROYSE CITY — Winnsboro scored on its first seven possessions on the way to a 48-7 rout of Palmer in Class 3A Division I area round action Thursday night at Royse City ISD Stadium.

The Red Raiders got the ball first and went 65 yards with Tyson Johnson scoring on a 4-yard run to make the score 7-0.

After a Palmer punt, Nolee Carroll found Mississippi State commit Camden Capehart for a 40-yard touchdown to put the score at 14-0 with 6:38 on the clock.

Palmer got on the board, converting a fourth down with a 9-yard pass from Eric Cisneros to Cannon Cisneros to cut the score to 14-7.

Winnsboro fired right back with another 4-yard Johnson touchdown run. The extra point was blocked by Kennon Corey, making the score 20-7 with 1:15 left in the first quarter.



Winnsboro forced a quick three-and-out and needed just three plays to go 44 yards to score with a 1-yard Johnson run early in the second quarter. Later in the second quarter, Carroll found Capehart again with a 60-yard scoring strike to put the score at 34-7.

Winnsboro’s Joel Rosas recovered a fumble on the last play of the half to lead 34-7 at the break.

Winnsboro added an 8-yard Johnson touchdown run with 5:16 left in the third quarter and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Carroll to Troy Bassett with 11:12 remaining in the game.

On the final play of the game, Winnsboro’s Kase Saucier picked off a pass just in front of the end zone, capping a strong performance by the Winnsboro defense, including Stantton Hood, Clark Bryant, Neree Castleberry, Kole Batchelor, Gage Fulmer, Dylan Seay, Karson McNeil and more.

Johnson finished with 101 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. Carroll ran for 96 yards on eight carries and threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns on 14 of 18 passing.

Capehart had four grabs for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

Eric Cisneros ran for 67 yards on 18 carries and was 12 of 20 passing for 132 yards. Freshman Sutton Maddox had 77 yards on 18 carries.

Winnsboro (10-2) will take on Liberty-Eylau (10-2), a 57-7 winner over Pilot Point on Thursday in Tyler, next week. The contest is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29 at Sam Parker Field in Mount Pleasant.
