Foster: Comparing presidential candidates’ platforms

Editor’s note: This is the final column in a three-part series on campaign issues in this year’s election.

While many supporters of Donald Trump look back on U.S. history with nostalgia, forward-looking Americans are more concerned about the future, not only for themselves but also for their children and grandchildren.

Those insightful citizens are paying close attention to the campaigns of Trump and Kamala Harris for what is said and promised should he or she win the election on Nov. 5. Here a brief recap of Trump’s platform:

Finish the border wall to stop illegal immigrants from entering the country. Try as he might, a wall may stem the flow, but as long as jobs are available, immigrants will find a way to bypass the wall. Also, U.S. immigration law allows for legal entry by people ethnically persecuted or escaping political unrest.

Mass deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants. Even if the military was used in such an operation, which is illegal under federal law, there’s no realistic way to find millions of people living in the shadows. The chaos of removing even a few hundred thousand undocumented residents would send the economy into a tailspin from the loss of workers and the accompanying economic loss.

Most Popular

Repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act that now insures an estimated 45 million people. Thankfully, after first promising to end Obamacare in 2015, Trump and his braintrust (I use that term advisedly) still have nothing more than a concept of a plan, as he woefully admitted in his debate with Harris. Even if he had such a plan, it has no chance of passing in Congress.

Enact another tax cut, no doubt like his 2017 tax cut benefiting the wealthiest Americans who donate generously to his campaign. Economists say that the richest 1% of Americans now have more wealth than the bottom 90%. Those in the 1% need the least amount of help because they already have molded the U.S. tax code to achieve the maximum benefit with loopholes big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

In contrast, Harris offers a forward-looking platform that favors the middle class who not only carry the heaviest tax burden percentage-wise, but also form the backbone of our economy. Here’s a look at her proposals:

Enact a tax cut for more than 100 million working and middle-class Americans by restoring and increasing the Child Tax Credit and restoring the Earned Income Credit. No one earning less than $400,000 a year would pay additional taxes.

Support lower housing and rent costs with a comprehensive plan to build 3 million more houses and rental units. She will seek legislation that will cut red tape to build more housing faster and penalize firms that hoard available homes to drive up prices for local home buyers. In addition, she’ll sign legislation to outlaw new forms of price fixing by corporate landlords.

Continue to support entrepreneurs and small businesses that are engines for our new economy. A record 19 million new business applications were filed under the Biden-Harris administration, leading the Small Business Administration to triple lending to Black-owned small businesses and doubling to Latino and women-owned businesses.

Reduce cost-of-living expenses by taking on bad actors. As attorney general of California, she protected veterans and students scammed by bad actors and fought for seniors and workers who were defrauded. She will take on Big Pharma to continue price reduction for drugs and continue to defend Obamacare from Republicans efforts to repeal it.

Defend Social Security and Medicare from attacks by Trump and his allies like Ted Cruz, who wants to reduce benefits and extend the retirement age. Harris also said she will fight any efforts to implement the Republicans’ Project 2025 plan to eliminate the Department of Education or beneficial programs like Head Start and Early Childhood Education.

On a personal note, it’s clear to me that Harris has a substantive plan for the next four years, while Trump is master of the complain campaign.

His constant negative attacks and complaints of being the victim of media bias is even boring to the MAGA faithful attending his rallies. Let’s hope this campaign is his last hurrah.
