Apaches edge Blinn in double OT, 13-10

BRENHAM — TJC remained unbeaten in conference play with a 13-10 overtime win over Blinn on a brutally hot Saturday afternoon at Cub Stadium.
The Apaches go to 4-0 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference play and 4-2 on the season. The Buccaneers fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. It was the fourth consecutive win for Tyler.

In the second OT, Tyler Junior College’s Christian Baxter connected on a 36-yard field goal to give the Apaches their first lead of the game, 13-10.
Then it was up to the Tyler defense to keep the Buccaneers out of the end zone. They came through with the play of the game. When Blinn QB Rylan Wooten stepped up in the pocket, TJC’s Ziggy Loa knocked the ball loose and the Apaches recovered to secure the win.
Both teams had chances to score more points in regulation, but the defenses thwarted the offenses.
Both team missed two field goal attempts each during regulation and the game went to overtime tied 7-7.
In the first OT, Blinn’s Max Nowak, who had missed one right and one left on his FG attempts during regulation, nailed a 44-yarder for a Bucs’ lead of 44.
Then it was TJC’s turn. Baxter drilled a 22-yard field goal for a 10-10 tie, forcing the second OT.

For Blinn, it was the Bucs second straight 13-10 loss (last week BC fell to Trinity Valley in Athens). Blinn’s three losses have been by a combined 11 points.
The Apaches ran the ball well as Bryce Burgess had 94 yards on 22 carries and Lavarion Logan had 87 yards on 18 carries.
QB Nathan Greek hit on 16 of 26 passing attempts for 156 yards and an interception. Cam Thomas had five carries for 44 yards.
The TJC defense held Blinn in check by allowing 200 yards of total offense, including elusive QB Wooten to 14 yards on 14 carries, sacking the hometown Brenham quarterback seven times.
The Bucs had 87 yards rushing and 113 passing for a total of 200 yards.
Tyler was hurt with 17 penalties for 127 yards.
After TJC fumbled at its own 20 in the first quarter, Blinn took six plays to score a TD. Wooten hit Austin Abram III for a 6-yard TD pass. Nowak booted the PAT for a 7-0 with 5:43 showing.
After a 31-yard FG miss by Blinn, TJC had their best drive of the game, going 80 yards on 12 plays.
The Apaches got on the board in the third quarter as Logan bulled his way into the end zone from the four. Baxter’s PAT made it 7-7 at 6:35.
In the second quarter, Blinn blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt, while the Bucs missed a 26-yard attempt.
Later in the quarter, BC drove to the Tyler eight, but after a penalty and a sack from William Cornelson on fourth down, the Bucs came away with no points.
Once again in the fourth quarter, the Tyler defense came through. Blinn drove to the TJC 1. On fourth-and-goal, the Apaches stopped the run, but were guilty of illegal substitution, thus giving the Bucs another chance.
TJC stopped the Brenham squad on the next play, but the Tribe was ruled offsides.
On the third play inside the 1, Blinn’s Kelton Weathers went wide, but TJC’s Jacob Robinson and Skylon Louis threw him for a two-yard loss.
In the later stages of the game, TJC punter Bryan Ramirez launched a high punt that traveled 41 yards and hit a Blinn player on the helmet. Tyler’s Kam Robinson recovered at the 7.
TJC had a chance to win in regulation, but an errant snap resulted a block. Holder Ramiez saved the game when he tackled former Chapel Hill and Gladewater player Kameron Griffin.
Jacobson said both of the blocks were “operational” and not Baxter’s fault.
The Apaches return to play on Saturday, Oct. 19, hosting Cisco at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. It will also be the Apaches’ annual Breast Cancer Awareness Pink-Out Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
TJC is partnering with Christus Trinity Mother Frances in selling t-shirts for $15 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Blinn takes a break from SWJCFC play by hosting John Melvin University on Saturday, Oct. 19 in a 3 p.m. contest.
In other SWJCFC play, Navarro defeated Trinity Valley, 61-10; and New Mexico Military dropped Cisco, 20-5.
TJC leads the conference at 4-0, followed by Cisco (3-1), Kilgore (2-1), Navarro (2-2), NMMI (2-2), Blinn (1-3), Trinity Valley (1-3) and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (0-3).
Other games next Saturday have Kilgore visiting Trinity Valley, 3 p.m.; and NEO at NMMI, 3 p.m.
