East Texas native David K. Wilson, author of the popular Sam Lawson Mystery series, on Oct. 1 released a new haunting psychological thriller — just in time for Halloween.

“The idea for this book has literally haunted me for years,” Wilson said. “In fact, it was first conceived as a movie and was close to production when the pandemic shut everything down. It was then that I decided to turn it into a novel. And, since Halloween is my favorite time of year, it’s only fitting that I release it now.”

The Girl in the Whispers tells the story of Catherine Devereux, still emotionally and mentally fragile after the sudden death of her young daughter, as she reluctantly accompanies her husband to his family’s crumbling Louisiana estate.

There, she starts to hear troubling whispers and fears she may be having another breakdown.

But as the whispers escalate into ghostly visions of a little girl, her need to hold on to her sanity is outweighed by the desperate hope of reconnecting with her deceased daughter.

However, as the hauntings continue, they start to reveal a terrifying secret that could tear the family apart. But can Catherine trust her senses? Or is she descending into madness?

Originally from Lindale, Wilson now lives in upstate New York. He says that late fall, when most of the leaves have fallen, always puts him in the mood for good old-fashioned ghost stories, including local legends of real hauntings. But has he ever seen a ghost?

“I’m a skeptical believer,” he said. “But my kids both have seen things – when they were kids and as adults. In fact, Upstate New York is filled with tons of first-hand stories of hauntings and unexplained activity. At the very least, it’s fun to entertain the thought of it being real.”

The Girl in the Whispers is Wilson’s ninth novel and his first foray into psychological thrillers, although he has written screenplays for a few independent horror movies. However, he is known mainly for his popular Sam Lawson Mystery series, which mix gripping tension and plot twists with Wilson’s wry sense of humor. Earlier this year, Wilson released Murder in Spa City, the seventh installment in the popular mystery series.

All of Wilson’s books can be found at many independent bookstores, libraries, as well as on Amazon and other online book retailers.

Wilson grew up in East Texas, where he says he was surrounded by enough colorful characters to fill the pages of hundreds of books. He honed his writing skills as an advertising copywriter and creative director in agencies in Chicago and upstate New York. He has conducted several creative writing workshops and is also a seasoned ghostwriter and produced screenwriter. He currently lives in Saratoga Springs, New York.
