HP v Tyler 9-29-24

HIGHLAND PARK — Three momentum stealing plays in a key stretch of the second quarter swung the league opener into the favor of the Highland Park Scots as the Tyler Lions dropped a 35-9 decision on Friday on Randy Allen Field at Highlander Stadium.

The Lions fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in District 7-5A Division I play, while the Scots improve to 4-1 and 1-0.

After a tight first quarter in which HP led 7-3, it was a tough second period for the Lions.

It started out great for the Lions as the Scots face a fourth and less than a yard at the Tyler 27. Carter Crawford stonewalled Highland Park running back Matthew White and Tyler took over.

After a short punt, the Scots took over at the Tyler 43. The Lions defense stepped up again as Crawford, D’Cannan Sueing and James Collier combined to sack Randall.

Tyler forced a punt, but the Lions fielded the ball at their own 1, getting the ball out to the 10.

After an ineligible receiver down field, a loss on the next play, the Lions fumbled with HP’s Jack Steed recovering at the 10.

One play later, Randall hit White for the TD. Reece Tiffany’s PAT put Highland Park up 14-3 with 6:00 on the clock.

After the kickoff, the Lions had three straight incomplete passes and on fourth down punter LaTreyson Haralson tried to pick up a first down, but gained only three yards. Coach Rashaun Woods said there was not a call for a fake punt on the play.

Later, Haralson did have a spectacular play when he returned a kickoff from the 21, headed right and outraced the Scotts for a 79-yard TD in the third quarter. The point-after-attempt was blocked and the Lions trailed 35-9.

Back in the second quarter, HP took over at the 26 and two plays later quarterback Buck Randall hit Case Messer for an 11-yard TD pass. Reese Tiffany’s PAT put the Scots ahead 21-3.

After a three-and-out for the Lions, Highland Park had a 10-play, 67-yard drive that was topped off by a 1-yard run with 14 seconds left in the half. Tiffany’s PAT put HP up 28-3 at the half.

In the first quarter, the Scots went on top 7-0 with 7:27 showing as Benton Owens hauled in a 24-yard pass from Randall. Tiffany made the PAT.

The Lions had their best drive, a 14-play, 79-yard drive that was topped off by a 21-yard field goal by Marvin Espinal with 1:14 left in the first period.

A key play was a 32-yard halfback pass from Nicholas Collins to Davion Sirles for 32 yads to the HP 4.

For the second straight week, the Lions had trouble getting the run game going, gaining 11 yards.

Cadarius McMiller led Tyler with 17 yards on seven carries with Asthon Arriaga gaining 12 yards on eight attempts.

QB Caden Granberry was 9 of 23 for 98 yards. Sirles had four catches for 40 yards, while Haralson had three receptions for 37. Ken’Trevyon Quinsey had two snags for 39 yards.

James Lancaster led Highland Park with 95 yards on seven attempts. The Scots gained 195 yards rushing.

QB Randall hit on 17 of 33 pass attempts for 221 yards. Charlie Olmstead had four catches for 56 yards and White had four receptions for 48 yards.

LIONS TALES: At halftime, former quarterback Lance McIhenny was inducted into the Highland Park Ring of Honor. After his standout career for the Scots, McIhenny led SMU to two Southwest Conference championships. … Former John Tyler High School All-America and Texas A&M standout Keith Guthrie, who is an assistant coach for the Lions, went up against McIhenny in their SWC days. … Next week, the Lions play host to Joshua in their homecoming at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4. Kickoff on Earl Campbell Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. … HP visits Red Oak on Friday, Oct. 4. … In other district results: Burleson Centennial 35, Cleburne 28; and Midlothian 26, Joshua 10.
