National Voter Registration Day focuses on getting people signed up to vote.

On Tuesday, students from Texas College, UT Tyler, and Tyler Junior College registered to vote with help from the League of Women Voters. The aim was to make sure students are ready to vote in future elections, especially since many might be voting for the first time.

Nineteen volunteer deputy registrars worked across Smith County, registering a total of 107 people. UT Tyler had 50 registrations, Texas College had 34, Tyler Junior College Main Campus had 15, and the TJC West Campus had eight.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 7, giving voters a few weeks to sign up before the next election set Nov. 5.
