1964 Canton Eagles team to be honored Friday

One of the most outstanding teams in the history of Texas High School football will be honored in East Texas on Friday.

The 1964 Canton Eagles, known as “The Untouchables”, had an amazing season, achieving a 10-0 regular season record while not allowing a point.

Friday will be the 60th football reunion of that Eagles team and the Van Zandt Historical Commission will have the dedication of the Texas State Historical Commission marker at Norris Birdwell Stadium on the Canton High School campus.

The ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. There will also be a companion addendum marker which will be installed beside the larger subject marker.

Following the dedication, there will be a dinner and program at 5 p.m. at Easley Steakhouse.



To cap the evening, the group will head back to the stadium to watch the football game as the Canton Eagles (2-0) play host to Paris North Lamar (0-2), where the 1964 team captains will participate in the coin toss. At halftime all team members will be recognized.

Also, 1964 Canton High School principal Liston Barber, who is nearing his 100th birthday, is planning to attend. Coach Hesse is near 90.

The players on that squad were: 11-Rick Ray, tailback; 12-Mike Chambless, quarterback; 21-David Keahey, tailback; 22-Morris Boldon, wingback; 23-Dennis Shaw, wingback; 26-Ronnie Roberts, quarterback; 31-David Robinson, fullback; 32-Barry Burrage, fullback; 33-Larry Hunter, wingback; 35-Gaylon Ethridge, wingback; 36-Tommy Roberts, tailback; 42-David Hardy, end; 52-Mike Phillips, guard; 53-Eddie Valentine, center; 61-Gerald Mitchell, center; 62-Allen Hargrove, guard; 63-Steve Hodge, guard; 64-James Norrell, guard; 65-Bennie Pruitt, tackle; 72-Gary Priest, tackle; 73-Wayne Salsberry, tackle; 74-Bill Norrell, tackle; 75-Bobby Graham, tackle; 82-Virgil Melton Jr., end; 84-Eddie Sneed, end; 86-Walter Murphy, end; and 88-David Miller, end. Head coach: Dean Hesse, assistant coaches: Don Ross, Sam Yokley, Tony Ogletree, and Team Manager: Danny Malone.

Norris Birdwell was the Canton ISD Superintendent and Liston Barber was the CHS Principal in 1964.

The team captains were Chambless, Miller, Shaw and Valentine.

The Eagles were 10-0 and scored 292 points while not allowing a point during the regular season. This record still stands in Texas.

Most of the 27 players on the team had played together since sixth grade.

The Eagles, of Class 2A, scored wins over Seagoville (13-0), Edgewood (32-0), Commerce (26-0), Wills Point (13-0), Lindale (46-0), Mineola (48-0), Van (28-0), Grand Saline (26-0), Chapel Hill (38-0) and Kaufman (22-0).

Canton won the District 15-2A championship.

The Eagles gave up their first points in bi-district, but still captured a 7-6 victory over Cooper in Commerce.

Their remarkable season ended the next week in regionals, a 6-0 loss to an undefeated Atlanta team.

What a great honor for an outstanding group.

100th MEETING

Southwest Junior College Football Conference play gets underway on Saturday.

In Tyler, it will be the 100th meeting between Highway 31 rivals Tyler Junior College and No. 6 Trinity Valley Community College. The game is set for Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Earl Campbell Field.

The game will be broadcast by ESPN+ and on radio by The Team 92.1-FM.

TJC leads the series 53-46, including last year’s 20-17 win in Athens.

The Apaches are 0-2, while the Cardinals are 1-0.

Other games have Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (1-1) at No. 7 Navarro (1-0), 1 p.m.; and New Mexico Military (1-1) at No. 4 Kilgore College (1-0), 3 p.m. (The Team 92.1-FM).

Blinn (1-0) and Cisco (0-1) have byes.
