Two country music icons of the ‘90s will sing their hits in hopes of raising money for children in need during one of the region’s largest annual musical events.
Country music singer and Longview native Neal McCoy and fellow country music star Mark Wills will take to the stage Sept. 28 at LeTourneau University’s Belcher Center for the 30th annual East Texas Angel Network benefit concert.
Joining them for comedic relief will be nationally renowned stand-up funnyman Bill Engvall.
McCoy and his wife, Melinda, established the East Texas Angel Network 30 years ago to help families of children with life-threatening diseases pay secondary costs associated with getting their children medical care: travel expenses, lost wages, utility bills and more.
The annual benefit concert is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers, and it’s brought a number of country stars to East Texas. McCoy calls his friends in the country music business and asks them to help him put on a show. The star-studded lineup of singers has included Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Martina McBride and more.
Artists take little or no pay to perform during the event, and they take time to meet children whose families have been helped by the foundation, McCoy said in a recent interview.
“When they can physically put their arms around some of these kids or see what’s going on and the struggles that these families are going through, when they see that, it’s just like, ‘Oh yeah, I really want to help,’ ” McCoy said.
The concert takes place in conjunction with an annual golf tournament and dinner for event sponsors.
Wills sang his way to stardom with hits such as “Jacob’s Ladder,” “19 Somethin’” and “Don’t Laugh At Me.” The Grand Ole Opry member has released 19 singles that have placed on the Billboard rankings, and he’s entertained U.S. military troops around the globe.
McCoy is best known for his hits “Wink,” “Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On,” “No Doubt About It” and “They’re Playin’ Our Song.” He’s embarked on 15 USO tours, had three platinum albums and several Top 10 hits. In addition to his charitable work, he’s known for his daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance on his social media channels.
Engvall, a native of Galveston, has toured the country since the ‘90s and released several albums. He started in “The Jeff Foxworthy Show” and joined Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White in creating the Blue Collar Comedy franchise.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Belcher Center, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
