DALLAS — Funeral Service for Bolivia Collins Powell, 76, of Dallas will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas with Pastor Randy Langford officiating. Interment will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Bolivia was born January 26, 1948, in Lufkin, Texas to Bolivar Lee Collins, Jr. and Lottie Belle Lockey. She was named for her father. She was a fifth generation Texan. She married the love of her life Walter Connally Powell on November 23, 1973, in Lufkin, TX. They were married over fifty years. They had one son Walter “Walt” Connally Powell, Jr., who preceded her in death.
Bolivia was a 1966 graduate of Lufkin High School, and had attended SFA and Allred Business School. Prior to moving to Dallas, she was secretary at her father’s law firm. In Dallas, she worked at First National Bank where she met Connally.
Bolivia had multiple interests throughout her life. She loved animals, and had a variety of pets which included cats, dogs, horses, raccoon, possum and owls. Through her love of animals, she began to raise and show Miniature Schnauzers. Bolivia also bred multiple Miniature Schnauzer Champions, who achieved many awards. She showed many times at the Westminster Dog Show. Bolivia also enjoyed engaging herself in many other activities, such as snow skiing, fly fishing, playing golf, & target shooting.
She was a member of the Mary Tyler DAR and had been a member of the UDC, DAC, and CDXVIIC. She was in the Tyler Junior League, the Dallas Junior League, Lone Star Miniature Schnauzer Club of Dallas, American Miniature Schnauzer Association, life member of the NRA and the NRA Golden Eagles. She received the NRA National Patriots Medal. Bolivia was on the board of the Responsible Pet Owners Alliance and was National Schnauzer Rescue Chairman.
She was preceded in death by her son Walt, her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Sara and Dr. Robert Kurth, her nephew Roy Collins Kurth, her mother-in-law Martha Ann Connally Cassel and father-in-law Delbert L. Powell.
She is survived by her husband W. Connally Powell, niece and husband Karen and Ronnie Hall, nephew Robert Lee Kurth, Jr., grandnieces Kristen Hall Reid, Annabelle Kurth, and Ashley Kurth Allen, grandnephew and wife Ryan Kurth and Rusti Hall, great-grand nieces Hallie, Harlie, Bentley and Boston Hall, great-grandnephew Daegan Reid and numerous cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank her primary caregiver and friend Kenia Menjivar, the staff of Medical City Hospital of Dallas, the Plaza at Edgemere and Cambridge Caregivers especially Alice Brown.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service.
