“We were excited to get out on the field and play,” Brownsboro Coach Lance Connot said. “They threw a few formations we weren’t expecting, but our kids adjusted well on defense. I was real pleased with the way we ran and threw the ball on offense. We just want to get better everyday. These young athletes are sure fun to coach.”
The whole scrimmage was controlled sets of plays. The Bears had the Mustangs getting only one first down in their opening set of plays. The Bears moved the ball methodically down the field and scored on a three-yard touchdown run from Curtis Warren.
The second series of plays had the Bears defense stopping every play the Mustangs threw at them. Javarius Bell ran in a touchdown in two plays for the Bears’ second unit. The last play was with the second group as Adam Thompson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Braden Pinnell. The final two series were dominated by the Bears. They stopped the Mustangs, and ran the ball extremely well. In the final set, Thompson hit Keaton Delaney on a 44-yard touchdown pass.
The Bears needed to overhaul the offense, which had many players graduate. The offensive line consisting of Brady Hudler, Cam Anderson, Robert Spencer, Abram Aldendorf, Cameron Strait, and others made strides in becoming a cohesive unit. Thompson had numerous new receivers in Delaney, Gabriel Hendricks, and Mann Scott. Bralen Kirkpatrick, Micah Strickland, and Warren looked good running the ball.
Defensively, Jack Anderson, Cade Williams, Bell, Kirkpatrick, and Strickland flexed their muscles for the Bears. The Mustangs’ James Hicks, Kordell Berry, and Zion Smith did yeomen work offensively. While Bryson Bryant, Jalan Sanders, and Moses Redding made their presence known defensively.
During the ninth grade and JV scrimmages, both teams gave tremendous effort. The freshmen Bears team scored three touchdowns. The Mustangs scored once. While in the JV scrimmage, it was a defensive struggle, but the Bears were finally able to score a touchdown.
