ARLINGTON — For the first time since 2015, the Home Run Derby winner was from a division other than the American League East or National League East as Teoscar Hernández of the Los Angeles Dodgers edged out Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals in the finals of the 2024 Home Run Derby Monday Night at Globe Life Field.

Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central won the event in 2015. Since then, the winners have been Giancarlo Stanton (New York Yankees), Aaron Judge (Yankees), Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Pete Alonso (New York Mets), no Derby in 2020, Alonso (Mets), Juan Soto (Nationals) and Vladimir Guerrero (Toronto Blue Jays).

Hernández is also the first Dodger to win the event, which began in 1985.

Hernández hit 19 home runs in the first round to get to the second round by one home run.

In the semifinals, Hernández had 14 home runs. Alec Bohm (Philadelphia Phillies) tied it at 14 and hit one just foul as time expired before the bonus round. Bohm didn’t hit a home run in the bonus round, forcing a swing-off. Hernández missed his first attempt, but hit two straight home runs. Bohm only hit one home run in his three chances to send Hernández to the final round against Witt.

Hernández went first and had four home runs with 57 seconds left. He hit seven late to get to 11 in the bonus round, where he hit three more to bring his total to 14.

Witt had four home runs with 1:10 remaining and hit seven late to get to 11 before the bonus round. He got two quick outs and then hit No. 12. He got an extra out and got to 13 and then hit one deep that hit the wall, clinching the win for Hernández.

“I was nervous,” Hernández said. “When he still had two outs and one homer to tie with me, and then the last change he got was too close to tie, but thank God it didn’t go out. I was super happy.”

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — his former teammate in Toronto — surprised Hernández with his Blue Jays jersey. And his current teammate, Shohei Ohtani gave him advice early in the competition.

“He said to hit it to left-center, to not pull it,” Hernández said. “I had a better chance the way my swing is. It’s far, but he said it’s better for you.”

Witt won the High School Home Run Derby at the 2018 All-Star Game hosted by the Washington Nationals, edging out Rece Hinds, who is playing for the Reds.

First-round scores were Bohm (20), Witt (20), Texas Rangers’ Adolis García (18), Hernández (19), Cleveland Guardians’ José Ramírez (21), New York Mets’ two-time winner Pete Alonso (12), Atlanta Braves’ Marcell Ozuna (16) and Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson (11).

After the first round, Josiah Hartshorn (Orange Lutheran High School in California) and Jacob Parker (Purvis High School in Mississippi) competed in the finals of the High School Home Run Derby. Hartshorn hit five, and Parker hit his tying fifth home run at the buzzer. The contest was declared a tie.

In the first semifinal of the main Home Run Derby, Witt took a 17-12 win over Ramírez.

Pitching for Gunnar Henderson was Buck Britton, who played college baseball at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

The Orioles drafted Britton in the 35th round (1,046th selection) of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. Britton was in the Orioles system for seven seasons. He signed free-agent agreements with the Dodgers (2015) and the Twins (2016) before retiring from the diamond. His professional career numbers include hitting .270 with 786 hits, 59 home runs, 153 doubles and 407 RBI in 827 career games. He never received an official call to the “big leagues,” but did play 73 games in Spring Training with Baltimore (2011-2014), Los Angeles (2015) and Minnesota (2016). He hit a career .280 in Spring Training, hitting .375 with two home runs in 14 games in 2015 with the Dodgers.

After retiring from Major League Baseball, Buck went into the coaching ranks, returning to the Orioles organization. He spent the entire 2018 season as the manager of the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, leading them to a 68-66 record. He then was promoted to the Class AA Bowie Baysox for the 2019 season. With the Baysox, he led a worst-to-first comeback in the second half of the season, coaching the team all the way to the Eastern League Championship series before they lost to Harrisburg. Britton was named the league’s Manager of the Year for his performance.

Britton is currently the manager of the Norfolk Tides — the Triple-A team for the Orioles — and picked up his 400th career win this season.

The paid attendance for the Home Run Derby was 38,578.
