MLB Draft Notebook: Texas A&M’s Braden Montgomery selected at No. 12; Rangers, Astros take catchers

FORT WORTH — Braden Montgomery, a key contributor for 2024 national finalist Texas A&M who suffered a lower-leg injury in Game 1 of the super regional series against Oregon, was drafted No. 12 overall by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft Sunday night at Cowtown Coliseum.

“Happiness,” Montgomery said. “I’m glad they took me. It’s going to be awesome. I’m going to make the most of it.

“I want to be the best in every room and that’s how I go to work each day and so that’s how I approach things.”

In his lone season at Texas A&M after transferring from Stanford, the outfielder hit .322 with 27 home runs, 85 RBIs, 14 doubles and 53 walks.

TEXAS RANGERS



By virtue of winning the 2023 World Series, the Rangers had the 30th and final selection of the first round.

The Rangers selected Stanford catcher Malcolm Moore, who hit .288 with 16 home runs, 37 RBIs and 44 walks this season. As a freshman, he hit .311 with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs.

HOUSTON ASTROS

The Astros’ impending selection drew multiple boos from fans in attendance.

Houston also drafted a catcher, taking Sam Houston’s Walker Janek at No. 28.

Janek hit .364 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
