The City of Pittsburg is working to raise private funds to erect a life-size statue of Carroll Shelby in downtown Pittsburg.

The city announced the initiative earlier this week, with a goal to honor the legacy of Shelby, an automotive pioneer. With the approval of local authorities and the Shelby Foundation, plans are underway to erect a life-size bronze statue of Shelby in the heart of downtown Pittsburg.

“Shelby is not only a celebrated figure in the automotive world but was also a cherished member of our community,” the city said in a press release. “His remarkable achievements resonate with the people of Pittsburg, making him a natural choice for this commemorative project.”

Born on Jan. 11, 1923 near Pittsburg, Shelby rose to international fame as a race car driver, automotive designer, military pilot, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. With victories in domestic and international automotive races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, often heralded as one of the most accomplished figures in automotive racing history. Shelby has been inducted into Motorsports Halls of Fame around the globe.

Beyond his racing accolades, Shelby made contributions to the automotive industry, most notably through the creation of the iconic Shelby Cobra and the high-performance versions of the Ford Mustang with the Shelby models. His innovative spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence continue to inspire generations of enthusiasts and engineers worldwide. The last Shelby car that Carroll Shelby purchased is housed and displayed in the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum in Pittsburg.

“The statue will serve as a timeless tribute to a man whose passion, ingenuity, and spirit epitomize the American Dream,” the city said. “However, to bring this ambitious project to fruition, we need the support of our community and Carroll Shelby enthusiasts everywhere. We are launching a fundraising campaign to raise $70,000 by December 2024. Every contribution, no matter how large or small, will help us honor Carroll Shelby’s legacy and enrich the cultural landscape of Pittsburg for generations to come.”

The city invites businesses, organizations and individuals to join in this historic endeavor.

“Together, we can celebrate the life and achievements of a true visionary while leaving a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations,” the city added.
