West Texas A&M tops Patriots in LSC Softbal final

CANYON — The Patriots saw their 21-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling to West Texas A&M, 8-0, in the Lone Star Conference Softball Tournament championship at Schaeffer Field.

UT Tyler (48-8) was seeking its second straight tournament. The Lady Buffs (48-6) won their sixth LSC title.

The Patriots and West Texas A&M tied for the regular season crown, but the Lady Buffs won the series to gain the No. 1 seed. UT Tyler was the No. 2 seed.

UT Tyler will await to see if the squad is selected as one of six available at-large bids into the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament via an online selection show at 9 a.m. Monday (NCAA.com).

The South Central Regional Tournament will be split into two double-elimination brackets with four teams going to both the No. 1 and no. 2 overall seeds host sites on May 9-11.



UT Tyler’s Audrey Escamilla, Courtney Plocheck, Cassidi Mullen and Christin Haygood were all named to the 2024 LSC Softball Championship All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the Patriot’s three games in the tournament.

West Texas A&M’s Emilee Boyer, Megan Guericke, Emily Liskai and Diana Murtha earned All-Tournament honors with Boyer receiving the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor.

Haygood (15-1) suffered her first loss of the season. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs (2 earned) with three walks. Three other Patriots were in the circle as well.

Boyer (22-3) was the winner, going six innings (3 hits, 2 walks).

Sam Schott, JT Smith and Mullen had singles for UT Tyler.

Madison Johnson and Heaven Moreno had doubles for the Lady Buffs.
