New coffee shop to open this summer

A new coffee shop with a New Orleans flavor will soon open in Tyler.

PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans aims to open in July, according to its Facebook page. The business filed a building permit in December with the City of Tyler to start business at 6555 Old Jacksonville Highway Suite 160, which is in the Oak Hill subdivision near the intersection of Old Jacksonville Highway and Grande Blvd.

The coffee chain started in 1978 and has spread out to 14 states, including Texas. This will be the first location in East Texas, according to the website.

“A warm cup of PJ’s Coffee is more than just a brew — it’s an experience!” the chain stated in a press release. “Whether you are looking for a caffeine fix, breakfast sandwich, or freshly baked pastry, PJ’s Coffee in Tyler is guaranteed to have what you need to get your day going.”

PJ’s Coffee has been owned and operated by New Orleans natives and brothers, Paul, Steven, and Scott Ballard since 2008. The company sticks to its New Orleans roots, according to the website.

Menu items include coffee, tea, energy drinks, a variety of food as well as beignets so East Texans can enjoy some of that New Orleans-style flavor.

Cookie brand coming to Tyler

A popular cookie brand known for its late night hours is coming soon to Tyler.

Insomnia Cookies will soon open at 3979 University Blvd Unit 400, which is across the street from UT Tyler. The business hub includes other eateries like Enoch’s Wine & Coffee House, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken and Wings, Republic Icehouse, and Pizza Hut.

A representative with Insomnia Cookies told the Tyler Morning Telegraph the bakery is expected to open in “late spring.” More details are expected to be released soon.

Insomnia Cookies began in 2003 inside the dorm room of University of Pennsylvania student Seth Berkowitz, according to the company’s website. At that time in the early 2000s, there weren’t yet many late-night food options. Many eateries were closed and delivery options were spotty, the website states, and Berkowitz wanted something sweet and warm delivered to his door. So he imagined a business that would cater to people like him — “insomniacs.” Then, his dream started to come to life in the form of a business, “redefining the late-night, delivery-focused, food-service industry.”

The first brick and mortar store opened in Syracuse, New York. In 2021, Insomnia opened its 200th shop and expansion has continued since then.

There are a variety of classic and specialty cookies, including vegan and gluten-free options. To see the full menu, visit insomniacookies.com/menu.

While the Tyler shop’s hours haven’t yet been announced, locations are often open until around 3 a.m.
