Tyler Legacy will begin the second spring under head coach Beau Trahan on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders will get 15 practices before closing things with the spring game on May 9.
“We had a great offseason, a great winter,” Trahan said. “The guys are buying in. We tested last week with our lifts, 40s and jumps. The strength and speed of our team has really improved.
“I am looking forward to seeing the guys out there flying around and buying in. We are looking forward to a good spring. We are anxious as coaches to see where we are. We have a lot of spots to take care of. We will be pretty young in some key spots.”
Legacy is coming off of a 3-8 campaign and a trip to the playoffs. The Red Raiders’ fell to Wylie East, 23-14, in the opening round of the playoffs.
The Red Raiders will return their entire offensive line, including DeMarrion Brown-Johnson (6-7, 300), who started for Legacy last season as a freshman and has received offseason offers from Tennessee, Texas Tech, North Texas and Houston.
Trahan said the competition at quarterback will be between rising sophomore Von Lane, Zach Davis and Nolan Hable. Lane received varsity experience in district play and in the postseason as a freshman. Davis will be a junior next season and was 126 of 198 for 2,347 yards and 27 touchdowns in leading Grace Community to a 9-2 record as a sophomore. Hable is a rising senior and is currently playing for the Red Raider baseball team.
Micah Pierson is back at running back. He was the Red Raiders’ fourth leading rusher last season. Kalan Greenhouse and quarterback Luke Wolf both graduated, and Kavion Hall is now at Texarkana Liberty-Eylau.
On defense, the Red Raiders graduated eight starters.
“We have to have guys step up and make plays,” Trahan said. “We are excited to get out there and see what we have and get to work.”
Legacy will begin the 2024 football season Aug. 29 at Texas High.
